Edward Ripley “Teddy” Saunders IV (1980 – 2026)

With profound sadness and broken hearts, our family announces the unexpected passing of Edward Ripley “Teddy” Saunders IV, 45, of Front Royal, Virginia, on September 10, 2026.

Born on Christmas Day, December 25, 1980, in Fauquier County, Virginia, Teddy graduated from Fauquier High School, where he wrestled and played tennis and developed a love of skiing. From the very beginning, Teddy brought energy, determination, and a willingness to embrace life fully.

Teddy’s life was defined by service, loyalty, and an extraordinary love for his family, friends, and community. For several years, he followed in his family’s footsteps and operated heavy machinery for Hazel Equipment. His grandfather, father, and uncle were skilled heavy machine operators. Whether he liked it or not, he worked alongside his uncle Eddie at Hazel, and they made many memories.

For many years, he proudly served alongside his brothers and sisters in the fire service, where he held the rank of Assistant Chief. He was a valued member of the Marshall Volunteer Fire Department and previously served with the Chester Gap Volunteer Fire Department.

For Teddy, the firehouse was far more than a place to volunteer. It was his second home—a place of purpose, belonging, and family. The men and women he served beside became his brothers and sisters, and the friendships he formed there were among the most meaningful of his life. He devoted countless hours to helping others in their moments of greatest need.

Above all, Teddy was a devoted husband, proud father, loving son, cherished little brother, beloved uncle, and loyal friend. He shared 12 years of marriage with his wife, Amanda Dawn Saunders, and nothing brought him greater pride than being the father of his daughters, Grace and Sara Saunders. They were the center of his world, and his love for them was evident in everything he did.

Some of Teddy’s happiest moments came from the simple joys of life: summer vacations with his family in Chincoteague, gathering around the grill with friends and loved ones, bowling, participating in chili cook-offs, and filling a room with laughter. He had a rare gift for making people feel welcome and bringing them together. His kind heart, steadfast loyalty, warm sense of humor, and instinctive willingness to help anyone in need made him someone people could always count on. Those who knew Teddy will remember not only what he did, but how he made them feel—supported, valued, and never alone.

In addition to his wife and daughters, Teddy is survived by his parents, Edward Ripley Saunders III and Susan Pearson Hunter; his sister, Kasey Saunders, and her husband, Brandon; his beloved nieces and nephews, Ashton, Kendall, Maleah, and Kayden; numerous extended family members and friends; and his cherished fire department family at Marshall Volunteer Fire Department.

Teddy’s life ended far too soon, leaving a pain and emptiness that words cannot adequately express. Yet his presence will continue to live on in the people he loved, the lives he touched, the calls he answered, the friendships he built, and the countless memories he gave us. His laughter, compassion, courage, and generous spirit will remain with us, guiding us through the days ahead and reminding us of the remarkable man he was.

Please keep Teddy’s wife, daughters, parents, sister, extended family, and entire fire department family in your thoughts and prayers as we face this unimaginable loss. We are deeply grateful for the love, kindness, and support already surrounding our family.

A celebration of Teddy’s life will be held on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., at the Marshall Ruritan Building, 8400 Salem Avenue, Marshall, Virginia 20115. Family, friends, fellow firefighters, and all whose lives Teddy touched are invited to join us as we remember, honor, and celebrate his life.

We will provide a comforting meal, and anyone who wishes is welcome to bring a dessert to share.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Teddy’s honor to Marshall Volunteer Fire Department, 4160 Rectortown Road, Marshall, Virginia 20115.

The family will also establish an education fund this week to support Grace and Sara in their future endeavors. The family will share official contribution information once the fund is available. In the meantime, please direct questions to his sister, Kasey.

Rest peacefully, Teddy. You were deeply loved, admired, and treasured by so many. Your life mattered, your legacy will endure, and you will be missed more than words could ever say.
