I-66 Outside the Beltway Project: Lane closures and traffic changes week of September 9th

The Transform 66 Outside the Beltway project will add express lanes stretching 22.5 miles from the Capital Beltway to Route 29 in Gainesville, rebuild major interchanges along the I-66 corridor, create thousands of new park and ride spaces, and expand trail options for cyclists and pedestrians. What’s Happening week of September 9
Crews will continue shifting travel lanes and setting up concrete barriers to create safe work zones along Interstate 66. Upcoming planned construction activities include:
• Setting up long-term lane shifts along I-66 between Sudley Road and Bull Run Drive, from Route 28 to West Ox Road, and between Cedar Lane and I-495
• Clearing trees and brush inside the Route 28 and Route 123 interchanges and other areas where work zones are in place
• Temporarily relocating underground utilities continues along I-66 near Jermantown Road
• Continuing work to widen the median between Route 123 and Blake Lane to support upcoming traffic shifts

Upcoming Lane Closures and Traffic Changes
The following planned lane closures are expected to have significant traffic impacts. All work is subject to change based on weather and schedule. Find the latest information on travel conditions and work zones by visiting 511virginia.org or downloading the Virginia 511 app.

ROUTE 29 / GAINESVILLE
No significant traffic impacts scheduled.

ROUTE 234 (SUDLEY ROAD) / MANASSAS
I-66 East from Groveton Road to Bull Run Drive
Thursday, September 13: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Friday, September 14 and Saturday, September 15: 9 p.m. to 9 a.m.
Three left lanes will be closed to implement long-term lane shifts for construction.

ROUTE 28 (SULLY ROAD) / CENTREVILLE
I-66 East from Route 28 to West Ox Road
Thursday, September 13: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Friday, September 14 and Saturday, September 15: 9 p.m. to 9 a.m.
Three left lanes will be closed to implement long-term lane shifts for construction.

ROUTE 286 (FAIRFAX COUNTY PARKWAY)
I-66 East from Route 28 to West Ox Road
Thursday, September 13: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Friday, September 14 and Saturday, September 15: 9 p.m. to 9 a.m.
Three left lanes will be closed to implement long-term lane shifts for construction.

ROUTE 50 / FAIRFAX
No significant traffic impacts scheduled.

ROUTE 123 (CHAIN BRIDGE ROAD) / OAKTON – CITY OF FAIRFAX
Ramp from I-66 East to Route 123 South
Tuesday, September 11: Midnight to 4 a.m.
Nighttime ramp closure to allow for setting of concrete barriers along previously shifted travel lanes. Traffic will be detoured to the Nutley Street Interchange and back.

Ramp from Route 123 South to I-66 West
Saturday, September 15: Midnight to 4 a.m.
Overnight closure of the ramp from Route 123 South to I-66 West. There will also be periodic stoppages of traffic on Route 123 South to remove an overhead gantry and set concrete barriers along previously shifted travel lanes. Traffic on Route 123 South heading to I-66 West will be directed to the I-66 East exit and will ride the ramps back to I-66 West.

Route 123 North at Ramp to I-66 East
Friday, September 14: 11 p.m. to 6 a.m.
Two left lanes will be closed and the ramp to I-66 East will be narrowed. There will also be periodic traffic stoppages of up to 15 minutes after midnight on Route 123 North and the I-66 East exit ramp to remove an overhead gantry.

ROUTE 243 (NUTLEY STREET) / VIENNA
I-66 East between Route 243 and Gallows Road
Sunday, September 9: 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Monday, September 10: 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
Three left lanes will be closed to implement long-term lane shifts for construction.

I-495 (CAPITAL BELTWAY) / DUNN LORING
No significant traffic impacts scheduled.
