Complete Game Win

The Cardinals were on the verge of a breakthrough last week. Losing close, hard-fought games, they struggled to get their pitching and hitting on the same page. Last night, they proved when both pieces come together, they will win games, and win big. The Cardinals hosted the Winchester Royals at Bing Crosby Stadium and walked away with a 6-0 win.

Cardinals pitcher, Shane Scott, was dominant on the mound, and threw a complete game shutout. Over nine innings, he allowed only five hits, while striking out seven and issuing only one walk. He had four 1-2-3 innings during the game, and never faced more than five batters in a frame. The defense was sharp behind him, and the Royals never saw a runner get past second base. Cardinals outfielder Derek Orndorff robbed the Royals of a potential threat, leaping to catch a ball headed over the center field fence, and preserving the shutout.

Offensively, Cardinals batters flexed their muscles when seven batters tallied nine hits over the course of the game. The Cardinals were led by first baseman Carson Bell, who accumulated two hits in four at bats, and left fielder Matthew Cooper, who went 2-3, including a solo homerun.

Coach Hurla was proud of his team, saying “It was good to get a win tonight at home. Shane Scott was a stud for us on the mound. A complete game shut out is special. We had some big hits, too.”

The Cardinals play in Strasburg tonight, and return home Sunday to face the Charlottesville TomSox. First pitch is at 7:00 pm. Upcoming events include the Valley Baseball League All Star game, held at Mauck Stadium at JMU in Harrisonburg, on Sunday, July 7th and Christmas in July at Bing Crosby Stadium on Friday, July 12th.
