Blue Ridge Wildlife Center Patient of the Week: North American River Otter
Last week, a North American River Otter arrived at Blue Ridge Wildlife Center after being attacked by a dog. With multiple bite wounds to the face, this patient presented our veterinary team with a complicated and challenging medical case.

But this otter also provided something incredibly valuable: an opportunity to help train the next generation of wildlife veterinarians.
We’re helping train the person who might save the next one. Meet Emma, one of our current veterinary students!

Otters are extremely rare patients for us, making this an extraordinary learning opportunity.
Under the guidance of our veterinary team, Emma has assisted with everything from collecting blood from the otter’s tail and gathering research samples to sedation, wound treatment, and vision assessments.
These aren’t skills you can fully develop in a classroom or from a textbook. They require hands-on experience, knowledgeable mentors, and real patients who need care.
And opportunities like this are not easy to come by.
Wildlife medicine is a highly specialized field, and gaining meaningful clinical experience with native wildlife can be incredibly difficult for aspiring veterinarians.
That’s why Professional Training is such an important part of our mission.

Every year, we help train hundreds of students and interns. We share our expertise, provide hands-on clinical experience, and prepare the next generation of wildlife professionals to tackle challenges they haven’t even encountered yet.
Think about what that means.
The knowledge Emma gains from treating this one otter doesn’t leave with her when her time at BRWC ends. She carries it into her career. She shares it with future colleagues. She uses it to help animals we’ll never meet, in communities we’ll never serve.
One patient can help us train one student, who may go on to save thousands of animals over the course of a career.

That’s the power of investing in people.
This week, we’re kicking off our Giving Tuesday campaign by highlighting Professional Training, one of the four pillars of Blue Ridge Wildlife Center’s mission.
When you make a donation, you’re helping us do more than care for the animals who arrive at our doors. You’re helping ensure that wherever injured and orphaned wildlife are found in the future, there will be skilled, compassionate professionals prepared to help.
The animals of tomorrow need us to train their caregivers today. Please, help us make that possible!
