Bowling Together: Why Work Is More Than a Paycheck

Published

on

Ask someone what a lifetime of work gave them, and notice how rarely they begin with the money.

They start with people.

The lunch table that solved the world’s problems in 30 minutes.

The softball team that lost every July.

The coworker who became a best friend, a best man, or a godparent to the kids.

Work has always been one of the great gathering places.

It is where we earn a living, but it is also where many of us find our people.

For generations, a job often came with an entire social world attached: the bowling league on Tuesdays, the fraternal lodge, the pancake breakfast, the company picnic, the retirement party where 40 years of work were toasted in a rented hall.

The paycheck was the reason you showed up.

The people were often the reason you stayed.

Sociologist Robert Putnam famously used bowling to describe how American social life was changing.

People were still bowling, he observed, but fewer were doing it in leagues.

The activity remained.

The group around it was disappearing.

That small image carried a larger point.

When people stop joining clubs, teams, associations, and other groups, they lose some of the everyday connections that help turn neighbors and coworkers into a community.

Work can create those connections too.

When people build something alongside one another — a product, a project or simply a good day’s work — they may be building more than the thing in front of them.

They are also building relationships.

A workplace is never only a place that makes goods, answers phones, or moves numbers across a screen.

It can also create belonging.

Years later, the report may be forgotten.

The person who sat beside you while you wrote it may not be.

Whatever else our work produces, one of its most lasting products may be the people we came to know along the way.
