Browntown Community Center Unveils Renovated Kitchen During Grand Reopening Celebration

The Browntown Community Center Association (BCCA) will celebrate the completion of a major kitchen renovation project with a Grand Reopening Celebration on August 15, inviting residents and neighbors to see the improvements made possible through community support, volunteer efforts, and generous donations.

The event will take place from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Browntown Community Center, located at 96 Browntown Rd. Visitors will have the opportunity to tour the newly updated kitchen, enjoy light refreshments, and meet the volunteers and contractors who helped bring the project to completion.

The renovation, known as Project Kitchen Sink, has transformed the Center’s kitchen into a more modern and functional space designed to better serve community gatherings and events. The improvements include increased storage, additional countertop space, and expanded cooking capabilities, allowing the kitchen to better support the activities held at the Center.

The project also included several important structural and safety upgrades. Improvements were made to the electrical wiring and plumbing systems, HVAC ducts were enclosed, ceiling tiles were replaced, flooring was refinished, and a new commercial stove with proper ventilation features was installed.

Much of the work was completed by a group of dedicated volunteers, with licensed contractors brought in for specialized portions of the renovation that required professional expertise.

Damon Sutton, a member of The Kitchen Team, said the project brought together people who were committed to preserving and improving the community facility.

“It has been incredibly rewarding to collaborate with such a driven group of volunteers to repair, update, and secure a future for this special place,” Sutton said.

BCCA President Martha Buracker, who also served on The Kitchen Team, said the renovation reflects the impact community generosity can have. Funding for the project came from estate donations from the families of Doodle Campbell and Sam Updike, as well as a grant from the Rappahannock Electric Cooperative (REC).

Buracker said the combination of financial support and volunteer labor allowed the association to complete improvements that will benefit the community for years to come.

“This is a shining example of what we can do with generous estate donations and a grant,” Buracker said. “While we used contractors for the license-required portions, our volunteer crew probably saved us another $20K. And the families of the donors will know that their loved ones’ legacy made a difference to the people of Browntown and to our Community Center.”

The Browntown Community Center has long served as a gathering place for residents of the Gooney Valley, providing space for community activities, fellowship, and local events. Association members said the updated kitchen will help the Center continue meeting the needs of residents and organizations that use the facility.

The Grand Reopening Celebration will provide an opportunity for community members to view the completed project and recognize everyone who contributed time, skills, and resources to make the renovation possible.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to attend the celebration on Saturday, August 15, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Browntown Community Center.
