Celebrate the New Year with Cabbage, a Humble Yet Lucky Tradition

Published

on

Cabbage may not seem glamorous, but it’s a star ingredient in New Year’s celebrations across the globe. Known for its resilience and versatility, this member of the Brassica oleracea family brings more than just luck to the table—it also delivers history, nutrition, and hearty flavor.

A Colorful Heritage

Cabbage belongs to a fascinating plant family cultivated for thousands of years. Its relatives include kale with curly leaves, snowy white cauliflower, green broccoli, and tiny Brussels sprouts. Even within the cabbage group itself, there’s variety, from the pale green standard cabbage to the richly colored savories in hues of red, white, and brown.

A Nutritious Powerhouse

The University of Florida Extension highlights cabbage as a nutritional gem. Cabbage has long been a staple for its quick-growing, hardy nature, low in calories but high in potassium and vitamins A and C. It thrives in cooler temperatures, making it an ideal crop for summer and fall planting in colder regions.

A Lucky New Year Tradition

Cabbage has earned a place on New Year’s menus worldwide, particularly in European countries like Germany, Croatia, and Bosnia, as well as parts of the United States. For many, it symbolizes luck and prosperity, making it a must-have for ringing in the new year.

Try This: New Year’s Day Cabbage Soup

Looking for a delicious way to enjoy cabbage? This savory cabbage soup recipe is hearty and perfect for cold winter days.

Ingredients:

  • 1 medium head of cabbage, torn into 2-inch pieces
  • ½ pound beef cubes (or substitute with ham or sausage)
  • 2 10-ounce cans of beef broth
  • 1 can carrot juice
  • ½ tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ground cloves
  • ½ tsp ground ginger
  • 1 cup sliced carrots
  • 1 cup sliced celery
  • 1 tsp celery seed
  • 1 cup coarsely chopped onions
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

  1. Braise the beef cubes with a small amount of oil in a skillet until browned.
  2. Combine beef broth, carrot juice, sugar, spices, vegetables, and braised meat in a large crockpot. Add the cabbage last.
  3. Cook on high for 3 hours, stirring occasionally. Lower the heat to warm and serve with crackers or bread.

This robust and flavorful soup is more than a meal—it symbolizes good fortune and a comforting start to the year.
