Do You Charge Your Phone by Your Bed? You Might Be Playing with Fire

If you’re like most people, you probably sleep with your phone close by—maybe even charging it on your nightstand. According to the National Sleep Foundation, over 60% of adults sleep with their phones within arm’s reach. But this habit could put you in danger without you even realizing it.

Charging your phone or tablet near your bed can pose a serious fire hazard. And one of the worst places to charge it? Right on your bed, or worse yet, under the covers. When charging, your phone generates heat to keep the battery working properly. If a blanket or pillow covers it, that heat has nowhere to go. Over time, it can build up, potentially causing the phone to overheat, damaging it, or even starting a fire. In extreme cases, it could burn you or set your bedding on fire.

To avoid this, always charge your phone on a flat, open surface with plenty of airflow. Make sure it’s not near anything flammable, and never sleep with your phone under your pillow or in bed.

Check Your Charging Cable
Another common risk comes from using damaged charging cables. Frayed or worn cables can spark and fire, so if your cable looks worse for wear, replace it. Cables are inexpensive, but the cost of dealing with a fire is immeasurably greater.

Beware of Swollen Batteries
The biggest safety risk, however, is a damaged or swollen lithium-ion battery. If your phone’s battery is swollen, you might see signs like the screen pulling away from the rest of the phone or some gaps forming between the screen and the housing. According to Tom’s Guide, this is a major red flag. If you notice swelling or loose adhesive, stop using the device immediately, and do not charge it. Place it on a flat, cool, fire-resistant surface, and contact the manufacturer or a repair shop for guidance.

Stay Safe, Sleep Sound
Taking simple precautions can make a huge difference in keeping you safe. Charge your phone in a safe spot away from your bed, avoid using damaged cables, and monitor the health of your device’s battery. That way, you can sleep soundly, knowing you’re not risking a dangerous fire hazard to keep your phone handy at night.
