Dry Eyes Need Consumer Awareness

Published

on

Dry eyes can range from a mild annoyance to a condition that severely affects daily life. Symptoms include painful scratchiness, sensitivity to light, and a stinging sensation. With around 25% of eye doctor visits related to dry eye complaints, understanding the causes and treatments is essential.

Causes of Dry Eyes

Several factors contribute to dry eye problems:

  • Age: Most patients experiencing dry eyes are over 40.
  • Soft Contact Lenses: These lenses can absorb the fluid on the eye’s surface, leading to dryness.
  • Vision Correction Surgery: Dry eyes are a common side effect of the 1.4 million eye surgeries performed annually in the U.S.
  • Eyelid Surgery: Sometimes, this surgery results in a small opening when the eyes are closed, which can cause dryness.
  • Screen Time: Activities like using a computer or watching TV reduce blinking, which helps keep eyes moist.
  • Environmental Factors: Wind can dry out the eyes, whether from outside or from heating and cooling systems.
  • Dust and Allergens: Particles in the air can irritate and dry out the eyes.

Treatments for Dry Eyes

Given the widespread issue of dry eyes, many pharmaceutical companies are developing and offering various remedies. Here are some of the current treatments available:

  • Lubricating Drops: Brands like Systane, TheraTears, and Refresh offer eye drops that help lubricate the eyes and relieve dryness.
  • Special Contact Lenses: Proclear and Acuvue Oasys are designed to alleviate dry eyes for contact lens wearers.
  • Nutritional Supplements: Omega-3 fatty acids, found in supplements and foods like tuna, have been shown to benefit eye health. A 2005 Harvard study highlighted these benefits.
  • Prescription Medication: Restasis is an FDA-approved drug that has shown positive results for many, although it doesn’t work for everyone.
  • Protective Goggles: Goggles from brands like Panoptx create a moisture chamber around the eye, helping to maintain hydration. These are available at ski shops and motorcycle shops.
  • Boston Scleral Lens: This custom-fitted prosthetic device creates a reservoir over the cornea, keeping the eye moist.

Raising Awareness

Awareness of dry eye causes, and treatments can significantly improve the quality of life for those affected. If you experience dry eyes, consult an eye care professional to determine the best treatment for your specific condition. By addressing dry eyes early and effectively, you can avoid the discomfort and potential complications associated with this common issue.
