Freshen Up Furniture and Carpets for a Springtime Reset

Published

on

As the weather warms and windows open, spring cleaning shifts into high gear. While most people focus on organizing closets and scrubbing kitchens, one area often gets overlooked: your furniture and carpets. After months of closed windows and indoor air, your couches, rugs, and curtains could use some attention—and a little effort can make your whole house feel brighter and fresher.

Even if you’ve been good about vacuuming over the winter, your home’s soft surfaces have been quietly collecting dust, pet hair, and indoor odors. Now’s the perfect time to give them a deep clean.

Start with your vacuum itself. A clogged or dusty vacuum won’t do much good. Empty the canister or bag, replace worn-out filters, and clear out any tangled hair or thread from the brush roller. A quick checkup now means better cleaning results.

Next, go over everything—and we mean everything. Vacuum carpets, area rugs, baseboards, and especially your upholstered furniture. Remove couch cushions to get at hidden crumbs and dust, and use the wand attachment for corners, seams, and under cushions.

If your couch or chair cushions have removable covers, check the care labels and give them a wash. It’s also a good time to replace any flat or damaged throw pillow inserts that have lost their bounce.

For carpets, tackle any stains you’ve been ignoring. Start by spot-cleaning spills and then freshen the surface with a generous sprinkling of baking soda. Let it sit for a few hours to absorb odors before vacuuming it up. If the carpet still looks tired—or has serious stains—you might want to rent a steam cleaner or hire a professional carpet cleaning service.

Don’t forget the windows. Curtains trap a surprising amount of dust, especially during dry winter months. Wash or dry-clean them based on the label instructions. Wipe down blinds and shades, clean the window glass, and give the windowsills a once-over while you’re at it. Clean windows don’t just let in more light—they make the whole room sparkle.

Finally, shake out or wash any throw rugs if the material allows. Even just beating them outdoors can make a noticeable difference in how your floors look and feel.

Refreshing your home’s soft surfaces might not be the first thing on your spring cleaning list—but it’s one of the most satisfying. A clean couch, fluffy pillows, and fresh-smelling carpets can lift the mood in any room and remind you that spring is officially in the air.
