Front Royal teacher Missi Magalis defies odds in Ovarian cancer battle

Front Royal residents Missi and Kahle Magalis discuss their journey with her 2015 Ovarian cancer diagnosis.
FRONT ROYAL — Two decades before most women get the sobering news that they have Ovarian cancer, Front Royal teacher and author Missi Magalis got the news at age 41.
Nearly two years ago, in January 2015, she was diagnosed with Stage 3-C cancer, and immediately had surgery, followed by 18 weeks of chemotherapy. Her remission last nearly a year, and she now is battling the disease again.
Missi, though, is filled with hope. She, along with her husband, Kahle, believes she will defeat the cancer. The couple is currently trying an experimental regimen, “Cold Capping” that will likely allow Missi to keep her hair throughout the treatment.
She says the treatment involves wearing a special cooling cap during her treatment, and her husband is in charge of keeping the caps at the proper temperature and switching them out to maintain her scalp at a constant temperature. The duo will document the process for future patients.
