Going Shopping? Don’t Forget to Ask About a Senior Discount

Published

on

Getting older comes with a few practical perks, and one of them can be lower prices.

Senior discounts are offered by many businesses, but they are not always advertised clearly. That means older shoppers can miss out simply because they never ask.

Pharmacies, grocery stores, restaurants, hardware stores, pet supply shops, and other retailers may offer discounts to older customers. Some apply every day, while others are limited to certain days of the week or selected products.

Even a small discount can add up.

A 10 percent savings on coffee, groceries, household supplies or dining may not seem like much on a single purchase, but over time it can reduce everyday expenses.

Travel and recreation can offer savings, too.

Some airlines, hotels, gyms, parks, resorts and other leisure businesses provide special rates for older adults. In some cases, discounts may also be available for entertainment, wellness services or other activities.

The challenge is that eligibility varies.

One business may define a senior as someone 55 and older, while another may set the age at 60, 62 or 65. Some discounts require membership in a senior organization, and others may only be available at participating locations.

That is why it pays to ask.

A simple question at the register, booking desk, or customer service counter can sometimes uncover a discount that was not posted anywhere.

The same is true when making travel reservations or signing up for memberships.

Older adults who make a habit of asking about senior pricing may find savings in places they did not expect.

The bottom line is simple: if you qualify, there is no reason to leave a discount on the table.

Before you pay, ask.
