How Special Is Your Birthday, Really?

Published

on

Your birthday feels like your day—cake, candles, and maybe a few extra wishes. But just how unique is it?

According to Reader’s Digest, an estimated 20.8 million people worldwide share the same birthday as you, at least by date if not by year. That number is an estimate, since no complete global study has tracked every birth date, but it offers a fun reminder that you’re celebrating with a lot of company.

In the United States, some birthdays are far more common than others—and September dominates the list. Thanks largely to holiday conceptions around late December, September has long been known as the most common birth month.

Based on compiled U.S. birth data, the five most common birthdays all fall in September, typically led by:

  • September 9
  • September 19
  • September 12
  • September 17
  • September 10

The sixth-most-common birthday breaks the September streak: July 7.

Rounding out the top 10, the remaining most common birthdays return to September, including:

  • September 20
  • September 25
  • September 16
  • September 18

So while your birthday is still special—it is yours, after all—it’s also likely shared with millions of others blowing out candles on the same day. Whether you’re one in a million or one in twenty million, the celebration is what makes it memorable.
