Lord Dunmore’s War: A 250th Commemoration

Published

on

Journey back in time to the summer of 1774 at the historic Sky Meadows State Park. On August 10, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., history enthusiasts can immerse themselves in a pivotal moment in American history during “Lord Dunmore’s War: A 250th Commemoration.”

This event offers a unique opportunity to experience the atmosphere of the Virginia frontier during a season of unrest and western expansion. Participants will follow Royal Governor Dunmore and Lord Fairfax as they gather troops from nearby counties, preparing for their significant expedition to the west. The day’s activities include recruitment and enlistment ceremonies, unit drills, weapons demonstrations, and camp cooking, allowing visitors to engage with history up close.

The commemoration explores the battle’s aftermath, culminating in the Treaty of Camp Charlotte. This treaty resulted in the Shawnee ceding all lands south of the Ohio River, covering modern-day Kentucky and West Virginia, to Virginia. The political repercussions of this expedition significantly influenced anti-Crown sentiment in Virginia, contributing to the fervor that led to the American Revolution a few years later.

The event will be held at Sky Meadows State Park, 11012 Edmonds Ln., Delaplane, VA 20144. For more information, visitors can contact the park at 540-592-3556 or visit the Sky Meadows State Park website.
