Maria L. Cosby, 94, died after a brief illness at Warren Memorial Hospital in Front Royal, VA. She was born on October 18, 1930, in Utuado, Puerto Rico, to Josefa Quinones and Francisco Caban, both of who predeceased her.

Maria attended Radford College (now University) in Radford, VA. Upon graduation, she worked for the Central Intelligence Agency in Washington, D.C., and later taught elementary school. On April 19, 1952, she married Lynwood Anthony Cosby, and they settled in Forest Heights, MD. Upon Lynwood’s retirement, they moved to their home in Front Royal, VA.

During her lifetime, until her health made it impossible, Maria was an active volunteer in many charitable causes, including C-Cap of Front Royal and the Front Royal Chamber of Commerce. Maria was an accomplished entertainer and baker, generously sharing her legendary Christmas cookies with her family and many community members. She was also a talented seamstress and skilled crafter. She was very proud of her family, and her favorite way to spend her time was in the company of her loved ones.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Lynwood, in 2015. Survivors include seven children: Cathy Foos (Don) and Ann Burke (Dermot), both of Richmond; Andrew Cosby and Bryan Cosby (Elizabeth), both of Front Royal, VA; Michael Cosby (Violetta) of Forest Heights, MD; Terry Wiita (John) of Stanley, VA; and Tricia Kite (Robbie) of Ardmore, AL. She is also survived by grandchildren: Eric Foos (Elizabeth) of Charleston, SC; Nathan Wiita (Ariel) and Ryan Wiita (Heather) both of Atlanta, GA; Rian Dougherty and Liam Dougherty, Gavin Cosby and Michaela Cosby all of Front Royal, VA. Six great-grandchildren additionally survive her.

The last five years of her life were enhanced by the staff of Hidden Springs Senior Living Facility in Bentonville, VA. A special thanks to the Hidden Springs staff, the Front Royal Family Practice Physicians, and the Warren Memorial Hospital Critical Care Step-Down Unit.

A private service will be held at a later date. Instead of flowers, gifts in her memory can be made to C-Cap of Front Royal, VA.
