New Strasburg Chess Club Welcomes Players of All Levels

Published

on

A new chess club has quietly taken root in downtown Strasburg, bringing together a small but growing group of players who meet each week to compete, connect, and learn from one another in a relaxed, welcoming setting.

The Box Office Chess Club meets every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in the lobby of Box Office Brewery, located at 177 East King Street. The group includes players of all skill levels, from serious competitors to curious beginners, and welcomes anyone who wants to sit down at the board and enjoy the game.

“Our group is pretty small right now, so we’re trying to get the word out,” said Mary Ellen Hutchins, one of the club’s organizers. “All levels of players are welcome. We have some very strong players who are looking for other strong opponents, but are also very generous in sharing their knowledge with less accomplished folks. We have some beginners and every rating in between. We all play each other.”

That open-door, no-pressure atmosphere is what makes the group stand out. Whether you’re a U.S. Chess Federation (USCF) regular or someone who hasn’t played since middle school, the club encourages everyone to show up and give it a try.

“Our vibe is friendly, respectful, and supportive,” Hutchins said. “In light of the recent loss of Grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky, I feel honored to be getting to know the people who come out to play each week. There’s something really special about sitting across from someone at the board and sharing a moment of focus and fun.”

The club provides chessboards and a couple of game clocks for those who enjoy timed matches. Members are also welcome to bring their own sets or clocks if they prefer. There’s no cost to attend and no registration required; just walk in, find an open board, and make your move.

The setting inside Box Office Brewery offers a unique backdrop: comfortable seating, plenty of space, and the friendly energy of a local gathering place. Players are welcome to grab food or a drink during the games, or just enjoy the chance to play in a space that’s both relaxed and stimulating.

The club’s Facebook page, Box Office Chess Club, is the best way to stay up to date with weekly meetings, special events, and community updates.

As interest in chess continues to rise across the country, helped in part by popular streaming coverage, online platforms, and a renewed appreciation for in-person play, local efforts like the Box Office Chess Club offer a chance for real connection, face-to-face competition, and learning.

“This is a great place to play,” said one regular. “You get to meet people from all walks of life who share this one quiet passion. And you get better every week just by showing up.”
