Sammy Wines, age 74, of Chester Gap, VA, passed away unexpectedly on October 13, 2026, at White House Assisted Living near Richmond, VA.

Sammy was born August 24, 1952.  His father, Samuel Bud Wines, raised him, along with his paternal grandmother and multiple aunts.

He was preceded in death by his father, Samuel Bud Wines; stepmother, Mary Wines; and 12 paternal aunts and uncles.

He is survived by his sisters, Hope Johnston and her husband, Robert, whom Sammy always thought of like a brother, and Lisa Wines; aunt, Geneva Elkins, who is the last of his 13 paternal aunts and uncles; Sammy always said he was so blessed to have her with us for so many years; and numerous cousins.

Sammy was a painter by trade and worked in Northern VA with his father, etc., for many years.  He dealt with mental illness for four decades, and the last many years were in and out of Assisted Living Facilities.  We want to thank all the staff over the years who helped care for him; your patience, care, and kindness were greatly appreciated.

Sammy LOVED JESUS and enjoyed watching Jimmy Swaggart on TV; he literally left the TV on the same channel 24/7.  If you were visiting him and a song came on that he liked, he would start singing loudly, regardless if you were having a conversation with him.  In the last several years, he enjoyed telling others about Jesus and wanted to go to the hospital to hand out Christian coloring books or stickers and win souls for the Lord.  He also loved to sing “Jesus Loves Me” to anyone who visited him in the facility or hospital; he would sometimes start singing it in the middle of a store.

A private funeral will be on Friday, October 23, at Willis Chapel, officiated by Sammy Campbell from Maddox Funeral Home.

A Memorial Book will be at Maddox Funeral Home for guests to sign.

In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial contribution to Jimmy Swaggart Ministries, P.O. Box 262550, Baton Rouge, LA 70826. To help the family cover funeral costs, you can donate to Maddox Funeral Home, 105 W. Main St., Front Royal, VA 22630.
