Samuels Public Library Highlights Exciting March Programs and Community Partnerships
The “Library Ladies” are back in the Royal Examiner studio! Michal Ashby and Rachel Roman stopped by to share the latest happenings at Samuels Public Library, from exciting upcoming events to valuable community partnerships. With so many programs and activities on the calendar, there’s always something new to explore at the library.
Job Fair and Unplugging Day
On March 6, the library will host a job fair in partnership with Virginia Works, connecting local employers with job seekers. Two days later, on March 8, the library will celebrate the Global Day of Unplugging, featuring puzzles, coloring, a fiber arts club, and a special teen Lego Party—all designed to promote screen-free activities.
Craft Swap and Irish Language Class
March also marks the library’s first-ever craft swap on March 22, where visitors can exchange craft supplies. That same day, Connie Marshner will teach a class on the Irish language, exploring the history and basics of the traditional Celtic tongue.
Children’s Programs and Spring Initiatives
The library’s commitment to youth programs continues with the Shake It Up with Silly Stories event on March 18, led by local dance instructor Amy from Dance and Art Studio. At the end of the month, the library will launch a new Story Walk featuring The Best Flower Ever—an outdoor reading experience combined with a seed-planting activity.
With spring approaching, the library also offers free seeds for patrons to start their own gardens. The collection includes a variety of plants, including luffa seeds, which can be grown as edible squash or dried into natural sponges.
Studio 330: A Growing Creative Hub
Samuels Public Library’s Studio 330 is gaining popularity, especially its Memory Lab, which allows visitors to digitize old VHS tapes and 8mm movies. Regular walk-in hours are Thursdays from 12 to 4 p.m., and appointments can be scheduled via email.
The studio also hosts creative clubs like String Theory, a fiber arts group that welcomes knitters, crocheters, and embroidery enthusiasts.
Taste for Books: A Hollywood-Inspired Fundraiser
One of the library’s biggest annual events, Taste for Books, returns in April with a movie magic and Hollywood glamour theme. The fundraiser features food tastings, games, a silent auction, and themed cocktails, all supporting the library’s programs.
Community Support and Partnerships
Ashby and Roman emphasized the library’s success is largely due to community involvement. Local organizations such as Parks & Rec, Ledo’s Pizza, Elks Club, and Shenandoah River State Park play key roles in supporting events. A new partnership with Chief Park Ranger Megan Goin will bring nature-based programs to the library starting this summer.
Library Hours and Final Thoughts
Samuels Public Library is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The staff encourages the community to visit, participate in events, and take advantage of the vast resources available.
