Samuels Public Library will once again hold a Summer Reading Club for area children and teens

Published

on

The Summer Reading Club is designed to keep youth reading while they are on summer break from school, thereby maintaining or enhancing reading skills that may otherwise atrophy during the summer months. Children from birth on up are encouraged to participate. Readers will receive free books or toys as a reward for books read each week. For those who are pre-readers, prizes will be awarded as they listen to books being read to them. “This year’s theme is ‘It’s Showtime at Your Library’ and we are excited about exploring this theme with our young patrons,” remarked Michal Ashby, Youth Services Supervisor. “We have almost 80 programs planned for children and teens this summer. Children always love the animal programs at the library, and this year we will welcome Larsen’s Amazing World of Reptiles. We are also pleased to offer ballet programs for children of all ages through the Northern Virginia Academy of Ballet. And we are really excited about our upcoming magic show, which will feature levitation and sawing a person in half, among other illusions. The teenagers will especially enjoy an improv workshop, an escape room, and gaming programs,” Ashby noted.

The library will be having a special kick-off day on Friday, June 7. “We hope to have everyone visit the library on the first day of Summer Reading Club,” added Ashby. “There will be special prizes for the first two hundred children who sign up for Summer Reading Club that day.  WCDS will be providing balloons, and their mascot Leonidas the owl will be on hand to greet children. There will also be face painting in the morning, before local entertainer Kevin Owens presents a balloon animal program at 1:00 P.M. At 2:00 P.M., Larsen’s Amazing World of Reptiles will be here so our patrons can learn about reptiles from around the world, with the opportunity to hold or touch them. It’s going to be a great day, and we hope that many children will begin their summer vacation with a visit to the library.”

The library is located at 330 East Criser Road in Front Royal. Questions about Samuels Library and its programs can be answered by visiting www.samuelslibrary.net or by calling (540) 635-3153.
