Snow blower safety tips
Want to treat yourself (and protect your back) this winter by swapping your old shovel for a shiny new snow blower? Here’s how to use this powerful tool responsibly.
Read the manual
Every snow blower is different, so start by reading your owner’s manual from cover to cover, paying close attention to safety instructions. Familiarize yourself with the various commands and features and how to use them, and, most importantly, learn how to shut down the engine in case of an emergency.
Other tips
Minimize the risks associated with using your snow blower by doing the following:
• Dress adequately for the weather (gloves, hat, warm jacket) and wear skid-proof boots.
• Remove any items or debris from the area to ensure a clear path before you start.
• Make sure no one is around while the snow blower is operational (keep children and pets far away).
• Check that all safety devices (hoods, deflectors, skid plates) are in good working condition.
• Don’t start or stop your snow blower on an incline.
• Always shut off the engine and remove the key from the ignition before letting the snow blower out of your sight.
• Before cleaning or inspecting your snow blower, disconnect the spark plug wire and wait until all moving parts are immobile.
• Use a shovel, a stick or a tool to remove any obstructions. Keep your hands far away from the discharge chute, the auger and the impeller at all times.
• Let the engine completely cool before storing your snow blower.
