VDOT Lifts Most Lane Closures for Thanksgiving Travelers Across Virginia

Published

on

As families prepare to hit the road for Thanksgiving, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is doing its part to help travelers get to their holiday feasts safely and with fewer delays.

VDOT announced that it will suspend many highway work zones and lift temporary lane closures on Virginia interstates and major roads from noon on Wednesday, November 26, through noon on Monday, December 1. This change is designed to ease traffic flow and reduce delays during one of the busiest travel times of the year.

“VDOT is thankful for everyone who drives safely, buckling up, staying sober, and keeping their eyes on the road,” said a department spokesperson. “Our goal is to help Virginians arrive safely and enjoy their holiday with family and friends.”

What Drivers Should Expect

While many construction zones will be paused, some long-term or semi-permanent work zones may still remain in place. VDOT advises all drivers to check current road conditions before leaving home.

Travelers can get up-to-date information through VDOT’s 511 Virginia system, available as a free mobile app, by calling 511, or by visiting 511.virginia.gov. The platform provides real-time updates on traffic, construction, incidents, weather, and more.

For hands-free help while driving, 511’s “speak ahead” feature allows users to hear voice alerts about upcoming traffic issues along their route.

Holiday Travel Tools

The 511 Virginia website also offers a Thanksgiving Travel Trends Map that shows when congestion has typically occurred on past holiday weekends. While it doesn’t guarantee predictions, the map helps drivers avoid historically busy times.

To view the map, go to 511.virginia.gov, select “Holiday Travel” in the top menu, and click through to plan your trip.

Express Lanes and Tunnel Info

If you’re traveling in Northern Virginia, express lane schedules for I-95, I-395, and I-495 are available at expresslanes.com. These reversible lanes can help save time, but schedules vary during the holiday.

For those crossing the water in Hampton Roads, VDOT encourages using alternate routes, including:

  • I-664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel
  • Route 17 James River Bridge
  • The Jamestown-Scotland Ferry (free)
  • I-95, depending on your route

Drivers should also be aware of mechanical issues at the Route 17 George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge, which may cause 45–60 minute delays during openings. However, no construction lane closures are planned for any major water crossings during the holiday period.

Safety First on the Roads

VDOT is reminding all Virginians to drive carefully, especially with increased holiday traffic and the potential for wildlife on rural roads. Here are key safety tips:

  • Buckle up — everyone in the vehicle, every time
  • Don’t drink and drive — arrange for a safe ride
  • Stay off your phone — distracted driving is dangerous
  • Leave early — expect delays and allow extra travel time
  • Watch for deer — especially in early mornings and evenings
  • Follow the “Move Over” law — if you see flashing lights or a stopped vehicle on the side of the road, move over a lane or slow down

Drivers can report road hazards or ask questions by visiting my.vdot.virginia.gov or calling VDOT’s 24-hour Customer Service Center at 800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623).

With millions of drivers expected to travel across the state this Thanksgiving, VDOT’s message is clear: Plan ahead, stay safe, and enjoy the holiday.
