Delegate Delores Oates of District 31 rose during the session to request that House Resolution 85 be taken up out of order so the chamber could honor the young athletes.
“I rise today with great pride to recognize a team that has captured not just a championship title, but the heart of an entire community,” Oates said as she invited the players to stand and be recognized.
The resolution commended the team for its performance on the field and its character off the field. Oates praised the players for showing “sportsmanship, discipline, grit, teamwork, and heart.”
“They showed up in the heat. They fought through hard innings and put their teammates before themselves every single time,” she said. “This is what champions do.”
Oates also made it clear that championships are not won alone. She recognized coaches Jesse Henry and Shane Wines and team manager Joe Cook for their leadership and dedication.
“Thank you for investing in these kids and for modeling dedication, character, and sportsmanship,” Oates said. She noted that the coaches spent countless hours mentoring the players and helping shape them into leaders, not just athletes.
The team’s success brought the community together. Local businesses followed the games and offered support. Families packed the stands. Neighbors rallied behind the players throughout the season.
“This team reminded our entire community what it means to come together and cheer for something bigger than ourselves,” Oates said.
One of the team’s standout moments came when a player was featured in ESPN’s Top 10 Plays of the Day, drawing national attention and excitement back home in Front Royal.
“We were excited to watch our kids on ESPN,” Oates told the chamber.
Oates asked the House to give the state champions a warm welcome. Lawmakers responded with enthusiastic applause as the young players stood proudly in the gallery.
The recognition marked a memorable day for the team, one that celebrated not only a state title but the pride of an entire hometown.
