Virginia Museum of the Civil War to Host Guided Battlefield Tour for 161st Anniversary of Battle of New Market
The Virginia Museum of the Civil War will commemorate the 161st anniversary of the Battle of New Market with a special guided tour on May 15, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., led by noted historian Aaron Siever of Aaron’s Civil War Travels LLC.
Limited to 30 participants, the tour offers a rare opportunity for Civil War enthusiasts to walk in the footsteps of soldiers and explore key sites of the 1864 battle. Pre-registration is required.
Siever, widely recognized for his deep knowledge of Civil War history, has been featured in programs with Civil War Roundtables and the Blue and Gray Education Society’s Civil War 101. His video work covers major conflicts like Gettysburg and Vicksburg, as well as lesser-known yet significant historical locations.
The tour includes visits to several notable New Market battlefield sites: the Bushong Farm, the “Bloody Cedars,” and the iconic Field of Lost Shoes, where the Virginia Military Institute cadets made their historic charge.
Participants will learn about troop movements, strategies, and first-hand accounts from soldiers who fought in the battle. The three-hour program includes both walking and driving portions; attendees are advised to wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes, bring sunscreen, and consider bringing a camp chair. Carpooling is encouraged, as the tour will involve travel to various nearby locations.
The $30 registration fee includes full access to the Virginia Museum of the Civil War after the tour and a 15% discount at the museum’s General’s Store.
To reserve a spot or for more information, contact the museum at 540-740-3101 or email nmbshp@vmi.edu. The tour begins at 8895 George Collins Parkway, New Market, VA 22844.
