Fair volunteer Dennis Grove said that event organizers have been working for many months to bring the secure the talent for the August fair, and believe that Greenwood’s appearance, along with Clarke County native Bryan Shepherd opening the show, will produce a large turnout.

“We try to keep our costs down, and also try to put on a good event,” Grove said in a telephone interview Thursday morning.

The country music vocalist has won numerous awards in his industry, including Male Vocalist of the year for the Academy of Country Music in 1983, two Male Vocalist of the Year awards from the Country Music Association. 1983 and 1084 and a Grammy for Top Male Vocal Performance in 1985 for “I.O.U”.

He also won CMA Song of the Year in 1985 for writing “God Bless the USA”, which has been voted the most recognizable patriotic song in America.

Greenwood said he knows first-hand what it’s like to have loved ones fighting for the freedom of all Americans as his father served in the Merchant Marines during World War II.

“God Bless the USA” was written on the back of Greenwood’s tour bus in 1983 and has gone far beyond his expectations.  The song has charted in the top five on the country singles chart three times (1991, 2001 and 2003), and is the only song in any genre to have ever achieved that feat.  The song was also number 1 on the pop charts after Sept. 11, 2001.

Opening the show Friday evening will be Bryan Shepherd, who hails from Frogtown, a mountain area located in Clarke County, Virginia.  Bryan Shepherd’s voice is an “authentic American style in the tradition of Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, and others”, according to his followers.  Fans say Bryan embraces the best of the classic country, blues and southern rock songbook.  He is also known for songs from his own pen and collaborations with other regional songwriters.

The 2018 Warren County Fair runs from Aug. 4 – Aug. 11.
