WCPS Avoids National PowerSchool Data Breach
Warren County Public Schools (WCPS) confirmed on January 10, 2025, that it was not affected by a recent data breach involving PowerSchool, a widely used student information system. The breach, which occurred on December 28, 2024, has impacted schools across the nation.
WCPS credits its robust cybersecurity measures, including a strong firewall, for preventing unauthorized access to its system. In addition, WCPS worked closely with PowerSchool to follow their guidance and ensure the safety of student and staff data.
“We take data security very seriously,” said Christopher Ballenger, Ed.D., Superintendent of WCPS. “Our team acted quickly to confirm that our systems were secure and that no information was compromised.”
PowerSchool is used by thousands of schools to manage student records, grades, and other critical information. The breach raised concerns nationwide about the safety of sensitive data in educational systems. However, WCPS’s proactive approach and strong security infrastructure kept its network protected.
Dr. Ballenger emphasized the importance of vigilance in the face of increasing cyber threats. “We remain committed to investing in tools and training to protect our students and staff from potential risks,” he said.
Parents and community members can rest assured that WCPS’s system remains secure. Any updates or further guidance regarding the situation will be shared promptly by the school division.
