Winter Storm Causes Spike in Virginia Traffic Crashes
A winter storm sweeping through Virginia has created hazardous road conditions, prompting Virginia State Police (VSP) to respond to over 200 crashes statewide in a matter of hours. While not all incidents are confirmed as weather-related, the storm has underscored the dangers of traveling in icy and snowy conditions.
From 4 a.m. to 11 a.m., state troopers were kept busy across all seven VSP divisions:
- Richmond (Division 1): 96 crashes, including four with injuries.
- Culpeper/Northwest Virginia (Division 2): 33 crashes, one with injuries.
- Central and Western Virginia (Division 3): 22 crashes, one with injuries.
- Southwest Virginia (Division 4): 11 crashes, none with injuries.
- Hampton Roads (Division 5): 22 crashes, six with injuries.
- Salem/Western Virginia (Division 6): 31 crashes, four with injuries.
- Northern Virginia (Division 7): 33 crashes, three with injuries.
The storm has prompted warnings from officials urging Virginians to stay off the roads if possible. State troopers, already working 12-hour shifts since Sunday, have been bolstered to manage the increased demand.
Safety Tips for Drivers Who Must Travel
For those who must drive, VSP offers essential safety reminders:
- Turn on headlights to improve visibility and ensure others can see you.
- Reduce speed to give yourself more time to react on slick roads.
- Avoid tailgating to maintain a safe stopping distance.
- Buckle up to minimize injuries in case of an accident.
- Inspect your vehicle before heading out, checking wipers, fluids, tires, and battery life.
Additionally, drivers are advised to carry emergency items, including a scraper, blanket, bottled water, snacks, a phone charger, and a flashlight.
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is working closely with VSP to monitor and address problem areas, but drivers are reminded that conditions can vary quickly.
More Snow Ahead
Meteorologists predict continued snowfall and icy conditions throughout the day, further complicating travel. Authorities recommend delaying non-essential trips until roads have been cleared and conditions improve.
