In a significant operation on March 1, 2024, the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) Patrol Division successfully apprehended a wanted suspect, Francis Belt, who was allegedly involved in a narcotics transaction in northern Frederick County. Belt, identified with an extraditable warrant from West Virginia and known as a convicted felon, was reportedly intending to sell cocaine and was believed to be armed, posing a potential threat to public safety.

FRANCIS BELT – As a result of this incident, Francis Belt has been charged with: – Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon – Possession with intent to distribute a scheduled substance – Possess firearm while possessing a scheduled substance – Reckless handling of a firearm – Brandishing of a firearm – Obstruction of justice.

The arrest occurred in the Cross Junction area around 5:40 p.m. after deputies were tipped off about Belt’s arrival. Upon the arrival of law enforcement at the scene, Belt attempted to flee on foot, leading to a chase. During the pursuit, Belt was seen pulling a handgun from his coat, which he momentarily brandished before discarding it into a pile of debris. Deputies quickly caught up with him, taking Belt into custody without any incident or injury to either party involved.

A search conducted on Belt led to the discovery of approximately one ounce of suspected methamphetamine on his person. Additionally, the firearm he discarded was promptly located and secured by the authorities. Francis Belt now faces several charges, including possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession with intent to distribute a scheduled substance, possession of a firearm while in possession of a controlled substance, reckless handling of a firearm, brandishing a firearm, and obstruction of justice.

Sheriff Lenny Millholland commended the diligent efforts of the FCSO deputies, emphasizing the importance of both responding to tips and proactive policing in maintaining community safety. “Sheriff Millholland stated, “As Frederick County continues to see fast-paced residential and economic growth, we are also, unfortunately, seeing a growth in the number of undesirable characters looking to commit various crimes in our community.” The Sheriff concluded, “Our agency remains committed to aggressively pursuing any such suspects and prosecuting any such crimes to the fullest extent of the law.”
