WCHS DECA Celebrates Alumni Success During DECA Month

Published

on

As part of this year’s DECA Month celebrations, WCHS DECA shines a spotlight on three exceptional alumni—David Kelly, Halea Cochran, and Sophia Logan. These individuals embody the values of leadership, innovation, and community impact that DECA strives to cultivate, serving as inspiring examples of how the skills learned through the organization translate to real-world success.

Halea Cochran: Entrepreneurial Excellence

Halea Cochran, a 2020 WCHS graduate, has built a thriving career as the owner of Scene Halea, LLC, a local hair salon. While in DECA, Halea competed twice at the state level, showcasing her passion for community service. In her senior year, she qualified for the prestigious International Career Development Conference (ICDC) with a project focused on anti-bullying advocacy, though the pandemic unfortunately canceled the event. Reflecting on her DECA experience, Halea credits the organization for her entrepreneurial achievements. “DECA gave me the opportunity to explore my interests in business while finding the creative ideas and philanthropic values that my career holds. Without WCHS DECA, I wouldn’t be the successful business owner I am today.”

Halea’s story demonstrates how DECA equips young people with the tools to transform their passions into impactful careers.

David Kelly: From Student to Educator

A 2019 graduate, David Kelly has returned to his roots as a teacher and coach at WCHS and Skyline High School. During his time in DECA, David earned state championships twice and competed at ICDC, experiences he now shares with a new generation of DECA members as a volunteer co-advisor. After graduating from Shenandoah University with a degree in sports management, David is blending his passion for education and athletics with his ongoing commitment to DECA’s mission. His role as a mentor highlights the enduring connections fostered by the organization.

Sophia Logan: A Creative Trailblazer

Sophia Logan, a 2024 graduate, is making her mark in digital marketing while supporting the WCHS DECA community. She is currently pursuing a degree in digital marketing at LRCC and working as a graphic designer with National Media Services, Inc. Sophia’s DECA journey included serving as chapter president and earning top honors at ICDC. In her senior year, she and her team placed in the top 20 internationally for their sales project. Today, Sophia remains a dedicated mentor, guiding current members as they prepare for their own DECA competitions.

Celebrating a Legacy of Success

The achievements of these three alumni underscore the transformative power of DECA in shaping future leaders. WCHS DECA continues to celebrate its accomplishments while inspiring current students to strive for excellence in business, community service, and beyond.

These stories remind us that the skills and values fostered through DECA don’t just end at graduation—they carry forward into successful careers and meaningful contributions to the community.
