UVA Health University Medical Center Named Virginia’s Top Hospital by Newsweek

Published

on

UVA Health University Medical Center has been ranked Virginia’s No. 1 hospital on Newsweek’s Best-in-State Hospitals 2025 list. This recognition underscores the hospital’s commitment to providing exceptional care, driven by a team of dedicated healthcare professionals.

“This is a well-deserved honor earned through the hard work and commitment of every member of our team,” said Dr. K. Craig Kent, CEO of UVA Health and executive vice president for health affairs at the University of Virginia. “I commend our caregivers and thank them for what they do every day to serve our patients.”

How Rankings Were Determined

The rankings combined multiple data sources, including surveys of healthcare professionals, patient satisfaction data, and key performance metrics such as mortality rates and patient safety. Magnet recognition, awarded for excellence in nursing, and data from the American Hospital Association also contributed to the assessment.

Key factors influencing the rankings included:

  • Recommendations from healthcare professionals.
  • Federal quality metrics, such as mortality and readmission rates.
  • Patient survey data assessing communication, cleanliness, and responsiveness.

Growth and Commitment to Excellence

UVA Health has experienced substantial growth in recent years, reflecting increased demand for its high-quality care. Since 2019:

  • Outpatient encounters rose by 55%, reaching nearly 1.3 million last year.
  • Surgical procedures increased by 65%.
  • Hospital admissions grew by 62%.
  • Emergency department visits quadrupled.

“Our remarkable growth reflects the trust patients place in us and our team’s dedication to providing the best care possible,” said Wendy Horton, CEO of UVA Health University Medical Center. “We’re committed to creating a workplace where our team members can thrive, ensuring we deliver world-class care to every patient, every day.”

UVA Health has also made strides in recruiting and retaining top-tier medical talent. Since 2021, more than 500 new physicians have joined the UVA School of Medicine faculty, bolstering the health system’s ability to meet growing demand. Retention rates across the system, including for nurses and physicians, consistently surpass national averages, reflecting UVA Health’s supportive and professional environment.

A Tradition of Excellence

This top ranking follows earlier recognitions for UVA Health. In Newsweek’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2024 list, seven specialties at UVA Health University Medical Center and UVA Health Children’s were ranked No. 1 in Virginia, with several achieving top-50 national status.

UVA Health’s flagship University Medical Center continues to set the standard for healthcare in Virginia, with this latest recognition reaffirming its position as a leader in patient care, innovation, and growth.
