February Fun at Samuels Public Library: Activities for All Ages
From snowflake science experiments to crafting birdseed ornaments, Samuels Public Library is buzzing with activity this month. Whether you’re a child eager to explore, a teen tackling a reading challenge, or an adult looking for a new hobby, the library has something for everyone.
Library staff members Pat Lopreto and Grace Green stopped by the Royal Examiner studio to share the exciting programs happening throughout February.
Engaging Programs for Kids
This Saturday, February 10, kids can participate in Grow a Snowflake, a fun science experiment where they will learn how to create their own crystalized snowflakes using borax and pipe cleaners. Just like real snowflakes, no two will be alike!
On February 21, young nature lovers can join the Wee Ones in the Garden and Elementary Green Thumbs programs, where they’ll learn about birds and how trees support them during winter. Participants will also make birdseed ornaments to take home and help feed their backyard feathered friends. This event is presented in collaboration with the Master Gardeners, a group known for their hands-on approach to teaching kids about nature.
For those with a sweet tooth, Cooking Blizzard on February 22 will introduce kids to the nostalgic treat of snowballs—those marshmallow-covered chocolate cakes. Since traditional white snowballs are hard to find in stores, the library is going the extra mile to make this treat a fun and creative experience. Kids will decorate their snowballs with edible toppings like licorice and gummy worms before enjoying their delicious masterpieces.
Reading Challenges and Clubs
The library’s Winter Reading Challenge continues until March 1, encouraging book lovers to track their reading in minutes rather than books. This change, inspired by the success of last summer’s adult reading program, has led to increased participation, particularly among teens who prefer reading lengthy novels. So far, thousands of books and hundreds of thousands of minutes have been logged!
The Books & Beyond discussion group meets on February 13, with this month’s theme focusing on poetry. Participants are encouraged to read books about poetry or collections of verse.
And for those who enjoy literary fun with a twist, the Bad Romance Book Club meets on the first Monday of each month to dive into the world of over-the-top romance stories.
Creative and Crafting Opportunities
Fiber arts enthusiasts can look forward to the newly launched String Theory Club, meeting every Saturday at 2 p.m. Whether you’re into knitting, crocheting, or other yarn-based crafts, this club welcomes all skill levels.
The Embroidery Club, held every Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon, provides a space for both beginners and experienced embroiderers to gather, share techniques, and—of course—enjoy plenty of conversation.
Meanwhile, the library’s Sewing 101 class offers a great introduction to sewing skills for anyone interested in learning how to create their own fabric projects.
Tech, Genealogy, and More
For those interested in technology, What the Tech meets every Tuesday at 2 p.m. to help patrons with tech-related questions. Whether it’s setting up an email account, learning how to use a smartphone, or exploring new digital tools, this is a great resource for all ages.
The Genealogy Club, meeting on February 12, provides guidance for those looking to uncover their family history and navigate historical records.
Studio 330 and the Memory Lab
Studio 330, the library’s maker space, continues to be a hub of creativity, with tools like 3D printers, Cricut cutting machines, and a laser engraver. The Craft Supply Swap encourages patrons to donate unused craft materials, with drop-offs accepted throughout February and early March. Those who donate will get early access to the swap on March 22.
The Memory Lab allows patrons to digitize VHS tapes, 8mm films, and other outdated media formats. Visitors can preserve family memories by transferring old home videos onto DVDs, free of charge.
Special Author Event
On February 20, the library will welcome Rocky Yost, author of Southern Girls Always Survive, for a special presentation. His novel is a gripping tale of survival, persistence, and self-determination, and it falls within the women’s crime fiction genre.
Support the Library on Day of Giving
Samuels Public Library’s Day of Giving is set for February 27. On this day, donations to the library will be matched by an anonymous donor, making it the perfect time to show support for this vital community resource.
