Check Your Back Fitness

Published

on

If your job involves lifting, bending, carrying, climbing, or long hours on your feet, your back is one of your most important tools.

A simple way to check your back fitness is to bend forward and try to touch your toes without bouncing.

You do not have to reach your toes. The real question is how the movement feels.

A healthy movement should be smooth, controlled, and mostly pain-free. Tightness in the hamstrings or lower back is common, especially in the morning, but sharp pain is not.

Warning signs include sharp lower back pain, numbness or tingling shooting down one leg, or a “catch” in your back that will not release. Those can be early signs of disc trouble or nerve irritation.

Workers with daily lifting jobs should also pay attention to morning stiffness that lasts more than 30 minutes. That is a flag worth raising with a doctor, especially if it keeps happening.

The goal is not to prove flexibility. It is to catch problems early, before one bad lift turns into weeks of missed work.
