March Madness Returns: NCAA Tournament Kicks Off March 16

One of the biggest events in college sports is set to return, bringing excitement, surprises, and plenty of buzzer-beaters. The 86th annual NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament begins on March 16, 2025, at UD Arena in Dayton, Ohio, marking the start of three weeks of intense competition across the country.

The tournament, often called “March Madness,” is a single-elimination battle featuring 68 teams. Each year, conference tournament champions earn automatic bids, while the remaining spots are granted as at-large bids by the NCAA selection committee. Factors such as team rankings, win-loss records, and overall performance help determine the bracket.

From its origins in 1939, the tournament has grown into a cultural phenomenon, producing legendary teams and unforgettable Cinderella stories. The Final Four, held on the last weekend, has become one of the most-watched sporting events in the country. All games are broadcast nationally, drawing millions of viewers.

Beyond basketball, the tournament fuels a wave of friendly wagers, with office pools and bracket challenges becoming an annual tradition for fans of all levels. The term “March Madness” was first used by Henry V. Porter in 1939 but gained national recognition thanks to CBS sportscaster Brent Musburger.

With upsets, last-second shots, and passionate fan bases, the NCAA Tournament remains one of the most thrilling events in sports. Let the madness begin!
