What Not to Use on Vinyl Plank Floors

Published

on

Vinyl plank flooring is a popular choice for homes because it looks good, resists water, and holds up well over time. But even though it’s considered durable, there are still some important cleaning mistakes to avoid.

According to The Spruce, a trusted home improvement resource, certain cleaners and tools can actually damage vinyl floors, leaving behind scratches, stains, or even causing the boards to warp and peel.

Here’s what to keep out of your cleaning routine when caring for vinyl plank flooring:

Harsh Chemicals

Skip bleach and ammonia-based cleaners. These powerful chemicals are simply too strong and can break down the finish on your floor. They may leave behind dull spots or even cause the material to fade.

Abrasive Tools

Avoid scrubbing pads, powders, or anything labeled “abrasive.” These might seem helpful for tough spots, but they can leave tiny scratches on the surface. Even popular magic erasers can cause discoloration if used too aggressively.

Hardwood Floor Cleaners

You might think a product safe for wood is also safe for vinyl—but it’s not. Hardwood cleaners often leave a sticky or greasy residue that attracts dust and dirt. Over time, this build-up can make your floors look dull or feel slippery.

The same goes for citrus oils, pine-based cleaners, and floor polishes. These can also cause buildup or leave behind an unwanted shine that doesn’t suit vinyl flooring.

Too Much Heat

Steam mops are a no-go. While steam sounds like a great way to sanitize floors, it can get too hot for vinyl. The heat may weaken the glue holding the planks in place, causing them to warp or separate.

Acidic Liquids

Don’t use vinegar or lemon juice. While these are natural cleaners for many surfaces, they’re too acidic for vinyl and can wear down the surface over time.

The Best Way to Clean Vinyl Plank Flooring

So, what should you do instead?

Start by sweeping or vacuuming regularly to get rid of dirt and grit that can scratch the surface. Then, use a damp (not wet) mop with a water-based cleaner made specifically for vinyl or labeled safe for use on hard floors. Don’t soak the floor, and make sure it dries quickly.

With the right tools and a gentle touch, your vinyl plank floors can stay beautiful and last for many years to come.
