Cooling Vest Choices for Summer 2026

Published

on

A cooling vest may be one of the most useful pieces of summer gear for workers facing long hours in extreme heat.

But “cooling vest” now means several different things.

Evaporative vests are usually the cheapest, often costing $30 to $60. Workers soak them in water, and the vest cools as that water evaporates. They work best in dry climates but are less useful in humid conditions, leaving workers wearing a damp vest.

Phase-change material vests use gel packs that freeze at a more comfortable temperature, often around 58 degrees. They work in any humidity and usually provide about three hours of cooling. These are often used when workers must wear protective clothing over their gear. They typically cost $100 to $250.

Battery-powered active vests use small fans to move air across the body. Depending on the setting, some can run for many hours on one charge. These are becoming more common in construction, warehouse work, and public safety.

Hybrid vests combine technologies for more intense cooling in extreme conditions.

Cooling vests are not a replacement for water, rest, shade, and heat safety planning. But for crews working through high heat, they can be a serious upgrade.
