Richard “Dickie” Eugene Mabie, 74, of Broadway, Virginia, passed away on September 28, 2025, at his home surrounded by his loved ones. He was born on December 17, 1950, to the late Curtis P. Mabie and Evelyn H. Mabie.

Richard “Dickie” Eugene Mabie

Richard devoted his life to public service. He proudly served as a career firefighter in the City of Richmond for 26 years, retiring at the rank of Captain. Even while working full-time as a career firefighter, Richard found time to volunteer at Hanover Courthouse Volunteer Fire Company 5, where he served as District Fire Chief for many years. In August of 1995, Richard retired from the City of Richmond Fire Department and followed his dreams of becoming a Fire Chief for Warren County Department of Fire and Rescue, the County’s first Career Fire Chief. After serving in that role for over 25 years, Chief Mabie retired on December 30, 2020, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, dedication, and courage in the fire service community.

He is survived by his loving partner, Judy Diehl of Broadway, Virginia; his children, Ryan Mabie and wife Julie of Hanover, Virginia, Derek Mabie of Linden, Virginia, and Vanessa McConnaughey and husband Richard of Strasburg, Virginia. He is also survived by his siblings, Margaret Floyd of Glen Allen, Virginia, Kyle Mabie and his wife Noelle of Carson, Virginia, and Alta Smitherman of Hopewell, Virginia. Richard was a proud grandfather to 12 grandchildren and a great-grandfather to one. He will also be fondly missed by his adored Goldendoodle, Emma.

Richard will be remembered for his love for his family, his athleticism on the softball field, his unwavering dedication to his community, his joyful presence at his church, Mountain Valley United Methodist Church in Broadway, VA, and his warm spirit that touched the lives of many.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2025. Doors will open at 10:00 am and the service will begin at 11:00 a.m. at Skyline High School, Front Royal, Virginia.

Honorary pallbearers will be Warren County Fire and Rescue career and volunteer members.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Firefighter Cancer Support Network or the Harrisonburg-Rockingham SPCA.
