Brighten Your Holiday Table with Creamed Butternut Squash

Published

on

Looking to bring a splash of color and a touch of elegance to your holiday feast? This Creamed Butternut Squash dish offers a velvety, flavorful alternative to traditional mashed potatoes. Naturally sweet and vibrantly golden, it’s the perfect complement to roasted meats, turkey, or vegetarian mains—and it looks beautiful on the table, too.

With just a handful of ingredients, this side dish is both simple and sophisticated. The richness of butter and cream balances the squash’s sweetness, while garlic and onion powder add subtle depth. Garnished with crunchy pumpkin seeds, it’s as visually appealing as it is delicious.

Creamed Butternut Squash

Servings: 4

Ingredients:

  • 1 butternut squash, peeled and cubed
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • ½ cup 35% heavy whipping cream
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Pumpkin seeds, for garnish

Directions:

  1. Cook the squash:
In a large pot, bring a gallon of salted water to a boil. Add the cubed butternut squash and boil for about 20 minutes or until fork-tender. Drain well.
  2. Mash and mix:
Return the squash to the pot or place it in a large bowl. Add the butter, cream, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Use a potato masher to mash everything together until smooth and creamy. For an even silkier texture, you can blend it with a hand mixer or immersion blender.
  3. Garnish and serve:
Spoon the creamed squash into a decorative serving bowl and sprinkle with roasted pumpkin seeds for added crunch and contrast.

Serving suggestion:
Serve warm alongside your favorite holiday main course. For extra flair, drizzle with browned butter or a touch of maple syrup before adding the pumpkin seeds.

This comforting dish is sure to become a new seasonal favorite—easy enough for a weeknight, but festive enough for your holiday spread.
