DMV Takes Action to Support Virginians Before the Storm

Published

on

In anticipation of service disruptions due to the pending winter storm, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is automatically extending some Virginia driver’s licenses and ID cards by 30 calendar days. Virginia driver’s licenses and ID cards with expiration dates between January 24 and January 31 will remain valid for an additional 30 calendar days. With safety and customer care in mind, DMV wants the approximately 7,000 customers across the Commonwealth to have a reasonable and safe opportunity to access DMV services once conditions improve.

Affected credentials will automatically reflect the revised expiration date if scanned by law enforcement or other authorized entities.

The effects of the winter storm may require DMV customer service centers to close or adjust hours across the state. Customers are encouraged to check dmv.virginia.gov/locations for the latest information on delays or closures before visiting an office.

Many DMV transactions can be completed online. Customers who renewed last time in a DMV office may be eligible to renew at dmv.virginia.gov from the comfort of their own homes.
