Where Is That Bad Smell in the House Coming From?

Published

on

Nothing is more frustrating than a foul odor in your home when you can’t figure out where it’s coming from. A bad smell can make a clean house feel uncomfortable, and the source is not always obvious. Before you start blaming the garbage can or the family pet, take a closer look at a few common problem spots.

The kitchen is often the first place to check. Food crumbs can fall behind the stove, under the refrigerator or into corners you rarely clean. Liquids from garbage bags or compost bins can also leak and leave behind a stubborn odor. Even small smells can build up over time. Move small appliances when possible and clean behind the microwave, dishwasher, stove and fridge.

Another surprising source may be your electrical system. Overheating outlets, switches or appliances can sometimes give off a fish-like smell. This is not something to ignore. If you notice this type of odor near an outlet, light switch or appliance, stop using it and call a licensed electrician right away.

Pipes and drains can also trap soap residue, food scraps, hair and other debris. Scrub drain covers and try pouring baking soda and vinegar down the drain, followed by hot water. Repeat if needed.

A fresh-smelling home starts with finding the source. With a little searching and the right cleaning supplies, you can clear the air and feel comfortable at home again.
