Why Reliability Often Matters More Than Brilliance at Work

Published

Being the smartest person on a team doesn’t always lead to the biggest opportunities. More often, the people trusted with the most important assignments are those who consistently follow through on their commitments.

Research suggests that dependability plays a larger role in long-term career success than many people realize. A large analysis of data from more than one million workers found that conscientiousness—the personality trait associated with being organized, dependable, and reliable—is the strongest predictor of job performance across a wide range of occupations. According to a University of Toronto summary of the research, the finding has remained consistent across industries. Earlier work by researchers Murray Barrick and Michael Mount reached a similar conclusion in 1991.

While intelligence and talent remain valuable qualities, reliability often determines who earns the confidence of supervisors and coworkers. Employees who meet deadlines, keep their promises, and consistently deliver quality work build a reputation that others can count on.

Those everyday actions may not attract the same attention as a breakthrough idea or exceptional talent, but over time they establish trust. And trust is frequently what leads to greater responsibility, leadership opportunities, and career advancement.

The importance of reliability tends to grow throughout a person’s career. Early mistakes are often forgiven as employees learn their roles. As experience increases, however, expectations rise, and a missed deadline or broken commitment can have a greater impact on both projects and professional reputation.

In many workplaces, the most valuable employee is not necessarily the most brilliant or outspoken. More often, it is the person whose colleagues know will do what they said they would do—on time and without being reminded.

Talent may open the door, but reliability is what keeps it open.
