Three Business Tasks That Still Need a Human Touch

Published

on

Automation can save businesses time and money, especially for repetitive work. But not every task is a good fit for artificial intelligence or automated systems.

Some parts of a business still depend heavily on judgment, creativity, and personal interaction. Employers that automate too much risk frustrating customers, weakening their brand, or overlooking good employees.

Customer service is one example.

Automated systems can help answer routine questions about business hours, services, appointments, or order status. In those situations, customers often appreciate getting a quick answer without waiting for someone to respond.

Problems arise when the issue is more complicated.

A customer with an urgent request, billing problem, or complaint may not want to work through a series of automated prompts. In those moments, reaching a real person can make a major difference.

A human employee can listen, ask questions, understand tone, and make judgment calls that an automated system may struggle to handle.

That personal interaction can also affect whether a customer decides to return.

A fast, thoughtful response to a complaint can sometimes strengthen customer loyalty. A frustrating automated exchange can do the opposite.

Creative work is another area where businesses may want to be careful not to rely too heavily on automation.

Modern tools can quickly produce images, advertisements, written copy and marketing layouts. That can help with early ideas or simple internal work.

But businesses that want to stand out may still benefit from hiring designers, illustrators, photographers and writers.

Creative professionals can develop materials around a company’s specific audience, history, personality and goals. They can also make choices based on local culture, customer expectations, and how a business wants to be seen.

That kind of distinction can be important in crowded markets.

If many companies use the same automated tools, their materials can start to look and sound similar. A business trying to build a recognizable identity may need something more personal.

Strategic decision-making is a third area where human judgment remains important.

Automated systems can help organize information, rank applications, or identify patterns in large amounts of data. Those tools can make work easier, but they should not necessarily make the final decision.

Hiring is one example.

A system may be programmed to look for certain keywords, years of experience, or education levels. That can help narrow a large applicant pool.

But rigid criteria can also eliminate people who do not fit a standard profile.

A candidate may have unusual experience, strong interpersonal skills, or the ability to learn quickly. Those qualities may not show up well in automated screening.

The same concern can apply to promotions, lending decisions, scheduling, and other choices that directly affect people.

Employers also need to be aware that laws and regulations involving automated decision-making are developing in some states. Privacy, fairness and transparency can all come into play when technology is used to evaluate employees, applicants or customers.

For that reason, businesses considering automated decision tools may want to consult a human resources professional or legal adviser familiar with the rules that apply in their state.

Automation itself is not the problem.

Used carefully, it can free employees from repetitive work and give them more time to focus on tasks that require judgment, creativity and communication.

The key is knowing where to draw the line.

Routine questions, data entry and predictable processes may be good candidates for automation. Customer complaints, branding decisions and major choices involving people often deserve more direct human attention.

For employers, the most effective approach may not be choosing between people and technology.

It may be using both where they work best.
