April is Car Care Month: 5 Smart Tips to Protect Your Vehicle

Published

on

April is National Car Care Month, a time when drivers are reminded to give their vehicles the attention they deserve. Whether you drive daily or just on weekends, how you treat your car makes a big difference in how long it lasts—and how much it costs to keep running. Local mechanics say a few simple changes in driving habits and routine maintenance can go a long way in reducing wear and tear.

1. Easy Does It on the Pedals
Speeding away from a stoplight or slamming on the brakes isn’t just hard on your nerves—it’s hard on your car. Sudden acceleration and harsh braking can damage your engine, wear out your brake pads faster, and reduce the lifespan of your tires. According to the Car Care Council, smooth driving habits not only protect your vehicle but can also improve fuel efficiency.

2. Don’t Let Your Tank Run on Empty
If you’re the type to wait until the fuel light comes on before hitting the gas station, it might be time to rethink that habit. Driving regularly with less than a quarter tank of gas can overwork your fuel pump and increase the chance of debris entering your fuel system. It’s better for your vehicle—and your wallet in the long run—to keep your tank at least partially full.

3. Take Tire Care Seriously
Your tires are the only part of your car that touches the road, so taking care of them is key. Driving with the wrong tire pressure or skipping tire rotations can lead to uneven wear, reduced traction, and lower gas mileage. Check your tire pressure once a month (including the spare), rotate your tires every 5,000 to 7,000 miles, and inspect the tread for wear.

4. Don’t Ignore the Dashboard
Those blinking warning lights on your dashboard are your car’s way of saying something needs attention. Ignoring them in hopes that they’ll go away could lead to more serious and expensive problems. Whether it’s the check engine light or a tire pressure alert, get it checked sooner rather than later to avoid further damage and ensure your vehicle is safe to drive.

5. Stick to Your Maintenance Schedule
Regular maintenance is one of the most effective ways to keep your car running smoothly. That includes oil changes, filter replacements, fluid checks, and inspections—all outlined in your vehicle’s owner’s manual. Skipping service might save time today, but it could cost more tomorrow if it leads to breakdowns or major repairs. Don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment with a trusted local auto shop for expert advice and service.

By keeping up with these habits, you’ll not only extend your vehicle’s life but you’ll also save money on repairs and improve overall safety. April is the ideal time to take stock of your car’s condition and make sure it’s ready for the seasons ahead. After all, your car takes care of you—why not return the favor?
