CFNSV Hosts Annual Luncheon Celebrating Community Philanthropy and Local Nonprofits
The Community Foundation of the Northern Shenandoah Valley (CFNSV) hosted its annual Community Philanthropy Day Thank-You Luncheon on Wednesday, October 9th, 2024, at Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury. The event brought together donors, grant recipients, and volunteers to celebrate the region’s vibrant philanthropic efforts and the powerful impact of charitable giving.

The luncheon was a special moment to honor the generosity of local donors whose contributions help sustain the foundation’s mission of strengthening the Northern Shenandoah Valley. It also recognized the dedicated nonprofits that have received grants for their remarkable work within the community.
CFNSV, which has grown significantly in recent years, now manages over 140 funds with a total endowment exceeding $15.3 million. In 2024, the foundation awarded more than $5 million in grants to local organizations. CFNSV President Cary Craig emphasized the long-term benefits of these grants, saying, “These grants will impact our community now and for years to come. We are proud to connect donors with nonprofits whose work is vital to the health and enrichment of our region.”
Several significant funds were highlighted during the luncheon, including the Cochran Family Youth Fund, Paul and Martha Rees Fund, and the Boxley-Fox Endowment Fund. These funds focus on addressing diverse community needs, from youth education and development to preserving local culture and supporting essential social services. Some of the notable grant recipients for 2024 included Literacy Volunteers Winchester Area, Opportunity Scholars, and the Winchester Rescue Mission, organizations that play key roles in enriching the lives of many in the area.
During her welcoming remarks, Executive Director Rebekah DesMarais expressed deep gratitude to the donors for their steadfast support. She underscored the power of collaboration, saying, “You are all making a positive difference in our community, and we are proud to partner with you.”
The event wrapped up with a strong call to action from both DesMarais and Craig. They encouraged attendees—whether individuals, families, businesses, or nonprofits—to find new ways to work together to meet the region’s future needs. As Craig pointed out, “Together, we can ensure that the Northern Shenandoah Valley remains a healthy, vibrant place for all.”
The event was a touching reminder of the strength that comes from community-focused philanthropy. Both donors and nonprofits were celebrated for their critical roles in creating lasting, positive change. With CFNSV’s continued growth and dedication, the future of the Northern Shenandoah Valley looks bright.
