Cockroach to the Rescue?
If you’ve ever asked yourself what good a cockroach could possibly be, a German startup has a surprising answer: tiny spies.
According to CBS News, the company SWARM Biotactics is turning Madagascar hissing cockroaches into potential lifesavers by equipping them with tiny “backpacks.” These aren’t your average bug accessories—each micro-pack could carry a camera, microphone, or even radar technology.
Why cockroaches? At 2–3 inches long, these creepy crawlers can squeeze into spaces humans and even robots can’t reach. But since they’re not exactly known for following orders, SWARM’s neuroscientists have developed a system of electrodes attached to the roaches’ antennae that allows researchers to “nudge” the insects in the desired direction.
The team insists the procedure doesn’t harm or cause pain to the roaches.
While it might sound like science fiction or a nightmare, the technology has serious potential. The startup envisions deploying its bionic bugs in search-and-rescue missions, such as locating survivors in collapsed buildings after disasters.
Still, one question remains: Are people ready to be rescued by a swarm of hissing cockroaches? Time will tell.
