Dorothy Marie Powell (formerly Stoots, daughter to Elsie and Edger Stoots, originally from Pulaski, Virginia) passed away peacefully on February 21, 2024, with family present.

Dorothy Marie Powell

Dorothy was born to Elsie and Edger Stoots in Pulaski, Virginia, on September 17, 1939. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Edward Neal Powell, Sr. She is survived by her daughter Debora Gordon, and her three sons, Gregory, Neal, and Michael; her five grandchildren: Mallory, Kristen, Brice, Stephanie, and Brent; and her 11 great-grandchildren that she adored.

Dorothy was the child of parents who lived through the great depression. She was one of six children who made the trip from Pulaski, Virginia, with their parents, who wanted a better life for their family.

Dorothy met her future husband, Eddie, when she was only five.  They both lived on Rivermont Drive in Warren County.  Eddie said he knew early on that she would be the woman he would one day marry, and they did so when they were only 18.

Dorothy worked at the Avtex Fiber Plant in Front Royal from 1961 to 1971 and then went on to co-own and help run several local businesses with her husband. She and Eddie enjoyed traveling and going on cruises, and she would accompany her husband to as many of the grandchildren’s events as possible. Dorothy and Eddie treasured those times.

Dorothy was a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.  She will be sorely missed by all those whose lives she touched.

Special thanks to the staff at Hidden Springs.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made in Dorothy’s name to Blue Ridge Hospice or The Warren County Humane Society.
