Freshman Focus Simplifies College Path for High School Students
Laurel Ridge Community College’s Freshman Focus program offers a guiding hand for high school students navigating the daunting college application process. Launched as a small pilot program, it has now expanded to all 16 public high schools in the college’s service area, helping students confidently take the first steps toward their college dreams.
Freshman Focus streamlines the transition from high school to college with three main strategies. First, early engagement introduces students to college pathways and simplifies enrollment. Second, students receive step-by-step support, including help with applications, financial aid, and scholarships. This is capped off with new student orientation events at their high schools, ensuring they’re college-ready before graduation. Finally, interdepartmental collaboration between Laurel Ridge’s student services, advising, and financial aid teams creates a seamless experience.
The program recently expanded to include Workforce Solutions programs, making it more inclusive. Students interested in technical careers, like welding, now have access to vocational pathways and the support of specialized coaches.
Outreach coordinator Michelle Cribbs emphasized the program’s alignment with the high school academic calendar. Career coaches visit seniors starting in September to highlight the program’s benefits. Workshops in the winter help students complete applications, financial aid forms, and explore college options. Students attend Freshman Focus events by spring to finalize their enrollment and celebrate their progress.
“Once their high school graduation arrives, they can celebrate knowing their classes are in place,” Cribbs said. Orientation events at high schools and college campuses provide further guidance, distribute Laurel Ridge merchandise, and schedule follow-ups with advisers.
Freshman Focus isn’t just about enrollment—it’s about ensuring students thrive in their transition to college. Participation numbers have grown significantly, from 425 students in the program’s first year to 550 last year. Early enrollment data shows students who join Freshman Focus stay on track with more academic credits, leading to faster degree completion.
The program’s success also helps the college optimize resources. By anticipating enrollment needs, Laurel Ridge can better allocate seats and classes, fostering a supportive environment for new students.
“Freshman Focus has fostered greater engagement, better preparation, and enhanced collaboration among various educational stakeholders,” Cribbs said. “The program helps students feel integrated and gives them a head start in their college journey.”
