VSP Launches Highway Safety Initiative on Route 29 Ahead of Thanksgiving

Published

Virginia State Police (VSP) will be in full force on Route 29 on Friday, November 22, 2024, to help travelers safely reach their Thanksgiving destinations. This 200-mile highway safety initiative stretches from Fauquier County to the North Carolina state line, aligning with the start of Thanksgiving break for many colleges and universities.

State troopers will focus on addressing major driving hazards, including speeding, reckless driving, distracted driving, and seatbelt violations. The operation comes in response to alarming crash statistics in recent years.

In the enforcement zone along Route 29, crash incidents surged from 659 in November 2021 to 774 in November 2023, a 17% increase. Even more concerning, injury-related crashes rose by nearly 43% during the same period, jumping from 277 to 396.

“We want to prevent needless tragedies this holiday season,” a VSP spokesperson said. “This initiative is about reducing risks and ensuring drivers and passengers alike remain safe on the road.”

The Route 29 operation follows a similar safety campaign VSP conducted along Route 460 in August, timed with the start of the fall semester for colleges.

Motorists are reminded to drive with caution, obey speed limits, and remain vigilant as holiday traffic picks up. VSP urges travelers to buckle up and eliminate distractions to help make the Thanksgiving holiday safer for everyone.
