Fuel: What You Need to Know About Octane Numbers

Published

on

When you pull up to the gas station, you’re met with terms like “regular,” “premium,” and “supreme,” and a choice of octane levels such as 87, 89, or 91. But what exactly does the octane number mean, and how does it affect your car’s performance? Here’s what you need to know.

Octane: A Key Additive

Octane is a hydrocarbon added to gasoline to control how easily the fuel ignites and burns under pressure. The octane number indicates the fuel’s resistance to premature ignition. A higher octane number means the fuel is harder to ignite, which is crucial for preventing engine “knocking.”

Knocking occurs when gasoline ignites prematurely in the engine, causing small, damaging explosions. This not only affects your car’s performance but can also lead to long-term engine damage. By ensuring fuel ignites at the right moment, octane keeps your engine running smoothly.

Why Different Octane Levels?

The variety of octane levels caters to different types of engines:

  • Standard Engines: Most cars are designed to run efficiently on regular fuel with an octane rating of 87.
  • High-Performance Engines: Turbocharged or high-compression engines benefit from higher-octane fuel, such as 91 or 93, which enhances performance and fuel efficiency while reducing emissions.

Using a fuel with an octane rating that’s too low for your engine can lead to power loss, increased fuel consumption, and higher greenhouse gas emissions. Conversely, using a higher-octane fuel than your engine requires won’t necessarily improve performance—it just costs more.

Choosing the Right Fuel

To optimize your car’s performance and efficiency:

  • Check your vehicle’s user manual for the recommended octane level.
  • Stick to the specified octane to avoid unnecessary costs or potential engine issues.

If you’re unsure about the best fuel for your car, consult an automotive expert for guidance.
