Ghosts, Caverns, and Helltown Secrets: Local Author Samantha Warren Brings Haunted History Back to Life

on

Front Royal’s history may be well known, but local author Samantha Warren is giving it a supernatural twist.

Warren, a lifelong Front Royal resident, has launched her Helltown Mysteries series, a set of fast-paced novels inspired by local lore, underground caverns, and a little imagination drawn from her own family life.

Her first book, Secrets That Never Stay Buried, introduces readers to two teenage boys who move to town only to discover their new home and the surrounding area hold more than a few ghostly secrets. What follows is a mystery adventure involving haunted houses, magical crystals, underground passages, and a close-knit group of friends determined to confront the supernatural.

Though the stories are fictional, Warren admits the setting feels familiar.

“Helltown,” an early nickname for Front Royal, serves as the backdrop. The books weave in regional history, including references to area caverns and landmarks, giving local readers a fun connection point.

From Sprained Ankle to Published Author

Surprisingly, Warren never set out to become an author.

After spraining her ankle and being temporarily sidelined at home, she decided to try writing a book simply to pass the time.

“I was just sitting there and thought, I’m going to write a book,” she said.

What started as a creative outlet quickly turned into something more. She began writing steadily, sometimes a chapter a day, and let friends read early drafts. Encouraged by their response, she moved forward with publishing.

Now she has multiple books in the series completed and continues working on additional installments.

Family Inspiration

Warren’s two sons, James and John, serve as the primary inspiration for the main characters. Their humor, personalities, and everyday conversations often find their way into the dialogue.

“I just listen to them every day and take in their comedy,” she said. “I’m like, that’s going in.”

The boys enjoy seeing their names and traits appear in print, making the series a meaningful family project as well as a creative endeavor.

A Growing Mystery Series

The Helltown Mysteries follow the same core group of friends across multiple adventures. Each book builds on the last, expanding the supernatural elements while maintaining humor and camaraderie among the characters.

While the stories include ghosts and suspense, Warren describes them as fun, fast-paced, and accessible to teen readers and adults alike.

She also plans to explore audiobook options and continue refining earlier editions as the series grows.

Where to Find the Books

Warren’s books are available locally at the Royal Oak Bookshop in Front Royal, which features works by area authors and artists. She has also held book signings and plans to continue expanding her presence in the community. For readers outside the area, her titles are also available for purchase on Amazon.com.

For readers who love small-town settings with a paranormal twist, Helltown Mysteries offers a blend of history, imagination, and youthful adventure, all rooted right here in the Shenandoah Valley.
