HARTS Launches Money Board Fundraiser to Aid Local Homeless Shelter

Published

on

In a recent interview with the Royal Examiner, Michelle Smeltzer, Community Liaison Director, discussed the latest fundraising initiatives for the Hope and Rest Temporary Shelter (HARTS). The shelter, a vital service in the community known for providing warmth and safety to the homeless during the winter months, is gearing up for its upcoming season.

One of the key fundraisers this year is a “money board,” where donors can choose numbered slots corresponding to dollar amounts; for example, selecting slot 50 costs $50. Each $50 contribution allows donors to win prizes, such as a free oil change, a $50 gift card for OnCue, or even a $500 aeration and seed service from Presidential Landscaping. This creative approach allows people to donate based on their means while contributing to a significant cause.

The shelter plans to open its doors the Saturday before Christmas, which falls on December 21st. This timing depends on successful fundraising efforts, as the shelter opened early last year due to adequate funds, which are currently lacking. Running the shelter is costly, with payroll alone reaching approximately $2,800 per week. Volunteers and donations are crucial, and the community’s support is needed more than ever.

Smeltzer also highlighted upcoming events like a paint night in October and a “Coldest Night Walk” in February, a national event that HARTS will participate in for the first time. These efforts are part of a broader push to secure the necessary funds to keep the shelter operational through the winter.

HARTS is making participation easy for those interested in donating or volunteering. You can pick numbers on the money board online or at local events like the Pickle Fest and the Festival of the Leaves. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for updates and links to contribute.
