How to Control Your Lights With Your Voice

Published

on

You get up in the middle of the night, still half asleep. The room is dark, and now you have to find the lamp switch.

There is an easier way.

A smart plug or smart bulb can let you turn lights on and off with your voice. You can use the assistant already on your phone, such as Siri or Google Assistant, or a separate smart speaker such as an Amazon Echo, Google Nest, or Apple HomePod.

The cheapest place to start is usually a smart plug.

A smart plug sits between the wall outlet and a lamp you already own. Many cost $25 or less. Plug it in, connect it to your home Wi-Fi using the maker’s app, and then link it to your phone’s voice assistant.

After that, you can say something like, “Hey Siri, turn on the bedroom lamp,” or “Hey Google, turn on the light.”

There is no special bulb to install and no wiring to change.

A smart bulb is a better choice if you want more than simple on-and-off control. Many smart bulbs can dim, brighten, or change colors. Brands such as Wyze, WiZ, Kasa, and Govee sell bulbs that connect directly to Wi-Fi, eliminating the need for a separate hub.

Before buying, check the box for compatibility.

If you use an iPhone, look for wording such as “Works with Apple Home” or Matter support. If you use an Android phone, look for “Works with Google Home” or Matter support. That helps ensure your phone can control the light without extra equipment.

A stand-alone smart speaker is optional. You do not need one if you are comfortable using your phone. But a speaker can be useful if you want anyone in the house to control the lights by voice without reaching for a phone.

Philips Hue is another option, though it is more expensive. Hue systems often use a separate bridge connected to your router. That extra box adds cost, but it can also make the system more reliable and responsive, especially in homes with several smart lights.

For most people, the easiest first step is simple: start with one smart plug or one smart bulb in the room where voice control would be most useful.

Once you have tried saying, “Turn on the light,” in a dark room, reaching for the switch can start to feel old-fashioned.
